You should try the website http://www.crimcheck.com. They offer an extensive public records section for free. This is easy to use and great for checking out your own records or for someone else you may know too.
But since you would have to do the research yourself which can lead to missing out on information, I would recommend http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com , they offer statewide background checks for $20. They also offer nationwide background checks for $30.

there are hundreds of sites you can get background on someone. but they charge fees for that. check with your local credit company. they can set up an account as many stores, apartment complexes do that charge 35.00 to run a check which they charge the client whether they get in or not. Try federal-records. the bbb in your area can also help you with local companies that can run checks for you. look under credit agencies in your yellow pages. the ones on the net are limited as to the information you can get. for a dollar you can get a drivers report. you can run the name and ssn in your states fdle to find out if any active criminal records exist. its free for that. if they are from out of state, use that state fdle. because of the new patriat act. alot of information can no longer get accessed to unless your law enforcement. if you know someone in your local law dept. they can run you a ncic check for you also. good luck!
