"You should be able to manage this through any of the internet companies that specialize in doing background searches (just try a search for something like "criminal background check"). I know for Alabama, theres a service clled alabama records.net You can probably also check your own history, perhaps for free, in the state in which you reside. Try going to your state police agency's website (Department of Public Safety in my state--whatever it is your "state troopers" work for), and if nothing else, you should at least be able to get a contact number for someone..

A background check would only give his known criminal history. There may be a lot more than what is known - he may be a criminal and hasn't gotten caught yet. He may be someone who sponges off women, he may do drugs or sell drugs, he may molest children. There's a whole list of things!
